What Will It Take for Construction Industry to Reduce Carbon Emissions

by beaconchronicle

Carbon emissions are a rising concern of the environmentalists, and the reason is the increasing global temperature. These carbon dioxide emissions are released by burning fossil fuels and cement manufacture. Fossil fuels are burnt to generate energy which is utilized in creating other energy sources like electricity, power transportation, i.e. cars and planes, and industrial processes. Similarly, cement is one of the construction industry’s essential components, and its production releases hazardous carbon. These carbon emissions have become a problem as they are released at an increased rate. They blanket the Earth’s surface and trap the heat inside causing the temperature to rise. Global warming harms food, water supplies, weather patterns, and sea levels.

Following are a few points to consider by general contractors in Brooklyn if you want to reduce their carbon emissions during a construction project;

The “4 R’s” Approach

Under this approach, one considers the powerful 4 R’s for anything they come across. One must-see if something can be reduced, reused, or recycled. This approach mainly works well for the construction industry.

Reducing energy usage, mainly when something is not being utilized, helps reduce energy usage, consequently helping reduce carbon emissions. Similarly, when a project ends, you are usually left with wastage. Using old materials before buying new ones or wasting them in the garbage without sorting them costs a lot of money and energy. It is better to reuse whatever materials can be reused to conserve energy.

Energy conservation also comes with the refusal of certain materials. Buying cheap and lesser quality materials might benefit in the short term, but there’s the likelihood of them getting damaged and worn out in a long time. This affects business efficiency and costs more having to install a new machine to serve the same purpose. Wastage once again is the reason of carbon emission and global warming.

Recycling as much as we can, does have a positive impact on the environment. Sometimes we cannot work in a zero-waste way, but we must try to recycle materials as much as possible for a more eco-friendly environment.

Managing Water Leakage to Avoid Wastage from the Construction Industry

Water contamination can have harmful effects on the environment. Many toxic chemicals get mixed in water that then travels across different places and is consumed by humans and animals. Taking care of water usage and preventing it from getting contaminated should be essential for the construction industry. For instance, scheduling water utilization during a project will help its wastage. Similarly, if the construction site is near a water body, adequate measures should be taken to avoid water contamination. Leaking pipes and toilets are another source of water contamination. Their maintenance should be done regularly.

Switch to Sustainable Materials

Avoiding plastic and non-biodegradable materials in construction can positively impact the environment with fewer carbon emissions. For instance, Timber wood is increasingly being used in the construction industry. It’s robust, durable and eco-friendly all at the same time.

Try New Methods for Construction

The offsite construction method is a new way of constructing, where different parts of the project are built away from the construction site and assembled at the construction site. Similarly, offsite manufacturing is another eco-friendly construction method where manufacturing planning, design and fabrication are done away from the construction site and installed altogether at the final location. It’s known to be a fast and efficient method of construction.
