As a child, and growing up, I never really had an interest in fishing. My dad was more of a golfer, and he liked watching other sports on TV. He wasn’t really an outdoorsy or rugged type. I formed my own interests because I found golf and most other sports boring. A lot of what I took up was based on what my friends were into at the time. A lot of it revolved around music and gaming, which in hindsight makes me realize I should have been spending more time outside.
As I reached past my teen years and into my 20s, I realized I was really missing out on all that the outdoors had to offer. I had recently forged a close friendship with a guy I went to highschool with, but never really hung out with back then. He had just gotten really into fly fishing, and I literally had no clue what the difference between that, and regular spin fishing was. Once he filled me in and showed me, I was really excited to give it a try.
For a while, we just took turns with his fly fishing rod. I wanted to get the feel for it before fully committing and buying one myself. It was not going to be a cheap venture, but then no hobby really is.
After a few weeks, I was ready to take the leap and buy my own fly fishing rod and the different accessories that I’d need to go along with it. My friend told me to check out TroutsFlyFishing.com, to see what I could find in terms of rods and accessories.
I spent a long time on their website learning as much as I could. They offer classes and private instructions on fly fishing, and they also have a blog that you can visit to learn all kinds of fishing related things, if you don’t want to shell out the money for classes. I opted to start with the blog, and if I needed further help I’d look into classes.
Every few months or so, we started taking trips to go fly fishing in different areas. This was becoming a really consistent activity for us, so we decided we should invest in a Riversmith River Quiver Rod Carrier, to better transport our rods. We split the cost on one that carries 4 rods, figuring that we were always going together, so it made more sense that way. Plus, if we wanted to buy other fly fishing rods for different types of fishing, we’d be set to bring them along.
It’s been quite an adventure to say the least. We have a great time fly fishing, and we have a secure way to get everything to our destination. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you are itching to get outside and try something different, or are already an avid fisherman.
